Free The Cranston AppleHere are some notes about this Saturday’s Pawtuxet Farmers’ Market from the Friends of the Pawtuxet.

Apple Season
Apple season is in full swing at the Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market with both Barden Family Orchard and Moosup River Farm offering Macintosh, Gala, Cortland and Macoun apples. Look for a small indentation on many of the apples—the trademark of a June 24 hail storm. The mark does not affect taste, but serves as a reminder of how unpredictable weather can change a farmer’s crops in just a few minutes. Peaches will also be available for at least two more weeks.

Corn Husking
Monday, more than a dozen volunteers organized by Orchard Farms PTO President Lisa Gargaro and Hope Highlands PTO President Inga Russell husked 1600 ears of corn for the Cranston school lunch program Monday in an hour an a half. The corn is donated to the schools by Cranston farmer Vinny Confreda. We will husk another 1600 ears Monday September 22 and need a few more volunteers. Interested? Contact Rhodes PTO President Julie Bradley.

Book Donations Needed
The Saturday October 4 Big Green Used Book Sale at the market still needs book donations. The sale has paid for our berry box recycling program and purchased two new tulip trees at the market. Please help our environmental projects continue by dropping books on the porch at 10 or 18 Williams Avenue, 25 Berwick Lane or 37 Ferncrest Avenue in Cranston. We accept hard or soft cover books, but please no magazines, textbooks or damaged books. They are heavy and do not sell. And please spread the word about the sale.

Blossoms
Flower grower Christina Dedora will be back at the market Saturday after a two week layoff.

See you Saturday at the market.
