Friends of the Pawtuxet emailed to remind us that the Market is still open – and will be open for three more Saturdays. There’s still plenty of produce for sale, as well as specialty items like Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market reusable shopping bags from Micki Whelan, Chang Xiong’s nimh chow, and Long Island cheese squash grown by Michelle Kosloski, which make smooth creamy “pumpkin” pies.

The Friends encourage people to “come talk about the election and buy some vegetables.”

Farmers Seeking Land
Two of the Market’s farmers are looking for land for next season. Both only need two to five acres. If you have any suggestions, please forward them to ch1650@pol.net and I will pass them along.

Marlborough Pie
recipe from Friends of the Pawtuxet

Fall is a great time to try a Marlborough pie, an old New England dessert that is rarely made, but promoted by Sturbridge Village . The combination of flavors is great and unique.

After making a single pie crust, mix together ¾ cup applesauce (I leave the peels on, but others do not) 2 teaspoons nutmeg juice of one lemon ½ cup heavy cream 4 eggs, well beaten ¾ cup sugar 6 tablespoons butter ¾ cup sherry (I have also used white wine.) Then bake at 350 degrees until the custard is set. The top of the pie will be brown and golden. When I last made this pie, it took almost two hours before the center cooked.

Pawtuxet Farmers’ Market, Rhode On the Pawtuxet, 9AM – 12AM.
