We knew it was significant – architecturally and otherwise – but on January 13 the Liberty Elm Diner, located in Proximal Cranston*, was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Liberty Elm Diner does a lot for the Elmwood part of the city. It’s a social nexus, it showcases local musicians, and supports local farms. They’re also working to replace the Elms on the Avenue by participating in the Elm Research Institute’s “Matching Tree Grant” program. They’ve survived petty break-ins and tax shakedowns, and the recognition is overdue. The National Register listing also entitles them to some federal and state tax and loan assistance, so go celebrate and caffeinate.
*Close to Cranston. Although in actuality everything in Rhode Island is close to everything else in Rhode Island. Thanks to the Providence Daily Dose for the reminder.
