paw paws are comingBetty Garrison of Rocky Point Farm reported today that their paw paws are ahead of schedule and are available now. It’s been a big year for paw paws, thanks to the heat and just the right amount of rain. The Garrisons expect to harvest them for the next 3 weeks.

Paw paws, also spelled pawpaws, have been growing in popularity. Edible Rhody, the Rhode Island version of the Edible magazine series recently profiled the fruit, and each year the number of web sites dedicated to paw paws seems to slowly multiply.

A paw paw is a native North American tree that produces large, custardy fruit with an incredibly short shelf life. Because they don’t travel well, the place to find them locally is Morris Farm, 2779 Warwick Ave. The Pumpkin & Paw Paw Festival on October 16 is probably your last chance to sample the ephemeral fruit before it disappears.

I have to admit I’ve come to depend on the return of the paw paws. I look forward to them – and once they arrive, I can’t get enough of that amazing flavor. It’s a lingering taste of a tropical summer in a season that otherwise seems kind of sad.
