Cranston To Receive Funds To Rehab the Rivers

Bookmark and Share
by Josh Wood Thursday June 4, 2009 The state is getting a much-needed economic boost to help preserve open space and rehabilitate the health of the Pocasset and Pawtuxet rivers. The two rivers have been squeezed out of their natural footprint by developments along the riverbanks. The funds, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will aim to restore some of the natural floodplain that has been lost.

In Cranston, $984,550 will be used to buy an 80-acre easement and 22-acre easement that will reconnect the Pawtuxet River to its floodplain by removing dikes and re-establishing aquatic plant species. Together, the projects are expected to create 54 jobs and benefit 130 acres, and alleviate repetitive flood damage to 16 properties.

Another $539,475 will be used in Cranston to buy a 30-acre easement as part of the Pocasset River Watershed Study, removing floodplain fill and restoring the stream channel. The project is expected to create 30 jobs and benefit 69 acres, and protect 67 residential properties that have dealt with repeated flooding.
