Artists’ Exchange and Black Box Theatre to Stage “A Christmas Carol” at Newly Renovated Park Theatre

Cranston, RI – For over a decade, former and current Cranston residents, businesses and city officials have awaited some sort of resolution with the Park Theatre. Many recall when the “closed for renovations” sign first went up over ten years ago. After a long, arduous journey, what had become an eyesore, a pillar of delay and disappointment, has finally been completed. “A Christmas Carol,” the classic holiday story of redemption, has special meaning this year at the Park Theatre, and for everyone who has been waiting for this long, sad story to find its happy ending. Artists’ Exchange and the Black Box Theatre will proudly share their award-winning version of “A Christmas Carol” at the Rhode Island Center for Performing Arts (RICPA) at the Historic Park Theatre on Saturday, December 19th, 2009. All of Cranston and beyond are invited to share in the celebration.

The Black Box Theatre’s award-winning version of “A Christmas Carol,” described by Ann Hood, New York Times Best-Selling Author and Writer for RI Monthly, as “the show that’s giving the Trinity Rep classic a run for its money,” and by Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film and Television Office, as “a fresh approach to this heartwarming classic,” is a family-friendly and heartfelt interpretation of Dickens’ work.

When asked what makes his show stand out, Rich Morra, Artistic Director of the Black Box Theatre, points to the honesty of his actors. His goal is to draw from his cast the most honest storytelling, focusing on small yet significant moments as opposed to grandiose spectacles. “It is those moments of very real emotion that are crucial to capturing the heart of the story, and of the audience.”

“A Christmas Carol” will open on Thursday, December 10th and will run through Thursday, December 17th in the Black Box Theatre at Artists’ Exchange, closing at RICPA on December 19th. All performances are scheduled for 7pm, with the exception of Sunday, 12/13 which will be a matinee performance at 2pm. All tickets are $15. Groups of 15 or more will qualify for a reduced ticket price of $10 per ticket. The December 19th show at RICPA will be preceded by a VIP Party from 4:30 to 7pm at Artists’ Exchange, hosted by Mayor Allan Fung and Steven Feinberg. The party will include a silent auction, delicious food from local restaurants including Efendi’s Mediterranean Grill, wine from Jonathan Edwards Winery and beer from Rapscallion Brewery, live entertainment provided by Mark Taber, Linda Succi and the Always on Sunday Ballroom Dancers, and the chorus from “A Christmas Carol,” finishing with a horse-drawn carriage ride down the street to the theater. Tickets to the VIP Party are $75. Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston. For more information, call 401.490.9475.
